For Joann Kandrac, principal of Kandrac & Kole Interior Design, the beauty of exterior design is how it can enhance a client’s quality of life.
“We love how exterior spaces can really impact a client’s lifestyle — the positive effects of nature on our mental health and well-being are very important,” says Kandrac. “We are seeing a large movement in this area in architecture, interior design and landscape design. Blending beautiful and comfortable furnishings (that don’t look like they are outdoor) with water features, plants and hardscapes is very satisfying.”
The firm was founded by Kandrac and Kelly Kole in Kennesaw, Georgia, in 2005 and began working on substantial outdoor spaces about 15 years ago. Kandrac says that the biggest challenge to outdoor design can be the outdoors itself.
“The materials have to be able to withstand weather conditions so using weather-resistant materials such as teak, aluminum, etc. is very important,” she says. “High-quality, durable outdoor furniture is an investment, so balancing quality and affordability can be a challenge.”
Kandrac says she is seeing an increase in the number of interior designers who are designing for outdoors.
“There is a huge demand in the market, and clients are asking for it,” she says. “Many of our furniture manufacturers who never carried outdoor furniture before now are.”

She says that in any relationship that her firm has with manufacturers, the things that are most important, in order, are quality, customer service, communication, customization and cost.
Kandrac adds that the best manufacturers “use durable and eco-friendly materials, create innovative designs and fresh looks and provide technical support.” She adds that manufacturers wanting to find ways to improve could do a better job with competitive pricing, short lead times and excellent customer service.

For those designers who want to learn more about outdoor products and materials, Kandrac suggests to just get out there.
“Attend industry events and shows such as High Point, network with your peers,” she says. “We are very transparent and love to help our design community. If we know of a great new manufacturer or someone new that we found, we are happy to share that with our design colleagues.”
Any advice for designers who are just now starting to take on more exterior design? “Listen to your clients,” says Kandrac. “Work closely with architects, landscape contractors and other professionals. Learn all you can about the products you will be specifying and lean on your sales reps for help. Read lots of magazines and design books related to this area of design.”
