Designer Kerrie Kelly offers guidance on creating outdoor spaces

Kerrie Kelly, CEO and creative director at Sacramento, California-based Kerrie Kelly Design Lab, says her designs take place both inside and out.

“I began designing outdoor spaces in 1995 and, since then, I’ve enjoyed blending indoor comfort with the natural beauty of the outdoors, creating cohesive and inviting environments for my clients.”

Kelly says that nature itself is her design partner.

“Designing exterior spaces offers a unique opportunity to create living and entertaining areas that harmonize with nature,” says Kelly. “I love the challenge of integrating natural elements, optimizing for sunlight and selecting materials that endure various weather conditions while providing beauty and functionality. When done right, exterior spaces are the ideal area for friends and family to gather and enjoy all year long.”

The challenge to outdoor design is that it is outdoors.

“One of the biggest challenges is dealing with the unpredictability of weather,” says Kelly. “It’s crucial to select durable, weather-resistant materials and plan for proper drainage and sun exposure. Balancing aesthetics with functionality to ensure comfort and longevity is always a key focus.”

Another challenge is that competition has grown, as more and more interior designers are taking on outdoor design.

“There is a noticeable increase. Many interior designers are expanding their services to include exterior spaces because clients are seeking seamless indoor-outdoor living experiences,” says Kelly. “The trend towards creating versatile, year-round outdoor living areas is driving this shift.”

To be successful in designing outdoors, designers need trust and communication with manufacturers.

“Designers need reliable manufacturers who provide high-quality products, clear specifications and excellent customer service,” says Kelly. “Collaboration and responsiveness ensure that the final design meets the client’s expectations.”

She said that good outdoor manufacturers excel in making durable and stylish products that hold up well, offer a wide range of customizable options and stay ahead of design trends.

“That helps designers create unique and personalized outdoor spaces,” says Kelly.

To be the best in the business, manufacturers should offer more comprehensive educational resources about their products and materials, she says.

“Providing detailed installation guides, maintenance tips and sample kits can help designers make informed decisions and confidently recommend products to clients,” says Kelly.

For their part, designers can stay informed by attending trade shows, participating in webinars and joining professional associations such as the NKBA and ASID, she says.

“Collaborating with manufacturers and suppliers for in-depth product training and staying updated with industry publications are also valuable strategies,” she adds.

Any advice for interior designers who are starting to take on more exterior design projects?

“Start by understanding the unique requirements of outdoor spaces, such as weather resistance and maintenance,” says Kelly. “Invest time in learning about durable materials and versatile furnishings. Collaborate with experienced landscape architects or outdoor specialists to gain insights and create cohesive designs.”
