Sunbrella talks 2024 fabric trends

With Interwoven coming up in less than a week, Casual News Now reached out to Sunbrella’s executive design director Greg Voorhis to see what’s on the horizon for 2024.

  1. What will be some of the new fabric color trends in outdoor going into 2024?

We expect to see warmer colors, like clay and terracotta, alongside vegetable-dyed-looking blues, greens and cream tones in outdoor fabrics next year. These warm tones paired with softer, dusted hues build interest with a compelling yet more subtle contrast. Consumers are interested in styles that feel casual yet sophisticated, and colors in these families build a strong palette that complements this aesthetic, especially when paired with patterns with botanical or artisanal inspirations. Many of these influences are seen in our latest Sunbrella introductions, as we find new ways to infuse these warmer tones across our portfolio and introduce evolved blues and greens that feel more elevated.

2. What’s the biggest change in color trends you’ve seen recently?

Spaces are definitely warming up recently, but everyone has their own preferences. Single-color trends are less popular as consumers increasingly follow their personal style. Consumers no longer feel like they need the permission of a design trend to choose a particular color or style.

Is brown back? We’ve seen a lot of tans and beiges coming in and replacing grays.

Neutrals are warming up across the home, and that includes outdoor spaces. Instead of the cool grays that dominated for years, we’re seeing increased demand for browns and beiges that add more warmth to an outdoor space. That can mean traditional solids across the range of browns — from soft, sandy hues to deep chocolates — or rich textures and patterns drawing from this palette. The Sunbrella portfolio has a wide range of options that cater to this new palette of neutrals.

What’s the biggest trend in fabrics right now and why?

Dynamic textures are the most important design element right now as advanced technology has made performance fabrics with unexpected yarns possible. From bouclés to chenilles, these soft and inviting textures add depth to an outdoor environment and make it feel more welcoming.

We are continuing to push into the sustainability story and embrace timeless vintage pieces, and we’re seeing these classic furniture pieces being reupholstered which enhances the sustainability story even more. I love seeing this unexpected mixing of styles and the juxtaposition of both timeless and fresh, a true representation of today’s cultural influences.

How was High Point Market for Sunbrella and what were customers looking for?

High Point Market is always an exhilarating time for the industry, and each year it excites us to see how our customers have used our recent introductions on their latest designs that will be coming into consumers’ homes in the seasons ahead. This year, our activities also included a panel on increasing profitability for interior designers with some of the top minds in the industry, as well as stain bar demonstrations with Sunset West and the M|T Company.
