Weltevree introduces the Picket Chair

Dutch furnishings brand Weltevree has launched a new outdoor seating line, the Picket Chair. Designed by German architect and designer Michael Schoner, the chair features a distinctive design that makes it appear as if the seat and backrest are floating.

“I love solving puzzles, but I enjoy creating my own puzzles even more,” Schoner said.

The Picket Chair’s floating illusion is created by using oiled bamboo boards with two different widths. Narrow boards create the frame, while wide ones join for the seat and backrest. The seat and backrest don’t touch thanks to a cutout that creates a detail resembling interlocking fingers or folding hands. The cutout board design was inspired by a Tirolian balcony railing where the seams between boards are used to create ornamental perforations.

Schoner is known for his distinctive approach to design that blends architectural precision with playful creativity. The Picket Chair illustrates his fascination with construction, geometry, space, mass and voids, using design to twist perception and create multiple meanings.

“I believe we are all hardwired with a library of archetypical forms, and I try to rediscover and reshuffle them,” Schoner said.

The Picket Chair is available with or without armrests, as well as an optional cushion set.
