While the recent announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year, Cloud Dancer, garnered mixed reactions, the folks at Sunbrella see the shade as a versatile player in home decor.
Cloud Dancer is described by Pantone as “a lofty white that serves as a symbol of calming influence in a society rediscovering the value of quiet reflection,” and as, “a whisper of tranquility and peace in a noisy world.”
Greg Voorhis, Sunbrella executive design director, sees that vibe and said that the color works well in a variety of fabric textures.
“Cloud Dancer brings a versatile, serene and airy quality to home textiles — think soft linens, billowy boucles like Improve White and plush chenilles like Platform Salt,” he said.

The Sunbrella team said it sees subtle, yet distinct undertones that give Cloud Dancer a rich warmth that’s reflected in a number of its own fabrics, such as Improve White, Platform Salt, Spindle Stripe and Serpentine Snow.
During the recent Interwoven textile fair in High Point, the Sunbrella team identified pattern layering as a major trend in home design, and Voorhis said a palette based on Pantone’s Cloud White lends well to that practice both inside and outside the home.
“When layered using fabrics like Spindle Stripe or Serpentine Snow, the gentle white infuses spaces with a comfortable, lush look that wraps rooms in a quiet softness, inviting relaxation and peace,” Voorhis said.
And while naysayers online have criticized the choice of white as Color of the Year — some dubbing it “landlord white,” a reference to the coverall shade preferred in rentals — the team at Sunbrella sees the hue as more than just white, viewing it as a versatile shade that’s equal parts fresh start and effortless chic.
