A lesson about communication from Don’s Home Furniture

Today more than ever, communication and transparency with customers is critical to the success of a furniture retailer.

That’s why retailers shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to show that they’re not only following lifesaving procedures but also speaking publicly about the issues.

Don’s Home Furniture in Madison, Wisconsin, did just that by appearing on a local news channel to talk about the STURDY Act and new tip-over safety legislation enforced by the CPSC. Watch the video to see what they spoke about.

This message is direct and addresses something important to every parent out there — their child’s safety. Some may not know about this legislation, and not only is the store educating them, but they’re also showing the customers in their area that they know how to properly set up the anti-tipping safety mechanisms. Perhaps they could even help their customers do it correctly for peace of mind.

What’s important here for casual retailers is not the tip-over legislation but the idea behind the newscast about it. For example, chemicals like PFAS are being outlawed in several states over the coming years, and when consumers learn about their effects, they will want to know that your outdoor product is free of PFAS.

These are easy ways to get your name out there and position yourself as an authority on outdoor products. Local news offers a brilliant piece of publicity that’s simple and inexpensive, yet very effective.

All it could take is a call to your local news station to suggest that they cover, as in the example above, the PFAS bans across the country with you as a source for the information.

But this can be applied to anything you can think of. Having a summer kick-off party? Ask the local news company to talk about it or come out and cover it.

Get creative, cater to your community and have fun with it.
